Why “WOMbat”?

We could say that we chose the name WOMbat because it symbolises the Australian lifestyle we’d all like to be living. We could say we picked it because we originally decided to start making WOMbat clothes when we were camping in the outback back in 2001. In reality, we decided on WOMbat because we liked it and we thought other people might like it too. WOMbats are pretty tough creatures and like to get out and about, just like our clothes. Handy really.

The Birth of the Brand

We were first set up in 2004 as an online store with a small range of men’s adventure clothing. This proved pretty popular, so we made the range a bit bigger and started doing women’s clothing too.

Since then, we’ve been refining and adjusting our style, making little tweaks here and there, and we now have a big range of fun and functional outdoor clothing for men, women and kids as well. We’ve also taken the brand from the internet to the high street, and now have 3 stores as well as our online shop.

What are our influences?

WOMbat is all about enjoying life’s adventures, which we try to keep in mind when designing the range. Walking, running, camping, rock climbing, surfing, skiing, kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, you name it and we love it! All of the graphics are inspired by our wearers and what excites them most: life and adventure!

What makes WOMbat unique?

The WOMbat style is casual; we pride ourselves on our easy-wear easy-care garments, all with a super soft hand feel. Texture is really important to us, we want the garments to feel soft and snug against the skin, to turn an average garment into a super-comfortable, ethical fashion wardrobe staple!

Most of our t-shirt graphics are hand-drawn with a naïve scribble form design, which we feel gives the brand a playful, personal touch. Bursting with colour, our designs are always bright and cheerful. Vivid colours brighten the mood and make people smile, that’s why at WOMbat we only allow fun, happy colours. What better choice for life’s go getters?

We are constantly researching new fabrics, washes, and trims that reduce the amount of nasty chemicals used in the production process. WOMbat believe very strongly in the Fairtrade clothing concept; Fairtrade has a massive impact on everyone involved in the production process, and we feel good in the knowledge that each of our Fairtrade fashion garments has been produced in positive working conditions. It feels incredible to be able to produce fashionable garments, whilst at the same time helping a community invest in their future. No one else on the high street can compete with our Fairtrade clothes range; currently 55% of our garments are Fairtrade, and we are constantly striving to find more suppliers to help us on our quest.
